This is our story...My Dad, Marion David Allgood, was born in 1927 in Douthat, Oklahoma. He attended Picher High School (school colors were red) and graduated in 1946. Immediately after graduating he served in the United States Army during WWII from 1946 to 1948. Shortly after completing his time of service in the Army, on December 31, 1948, he married my mother, Ramona.
In the spring of 1949, while attending Northeastern Oklahoma A&M college, Gomers Jones, assistant coach to Bud Wilkinson of the University of Oklahoma (school colors are crimson/red), made a trip to visit my dad, and offered him a full scholarship to play football for the Oklahoma Sooners. He accepted the offer and my folks moved to Norman, Oklahoma.
As for me, growing up in Northeast Oklahoma, I always remember my dad wearing red socks. My brothers and I often wondered why he wore them, as he would always wear them to our ballgames and such. Since both his high school and college colors were red, we thought maybe that was the reason. It wasn't until his passing, on August 9, 2004, did we discover the real reason dad wore those red socks.
You see, my dad was a born-again Christian, who grew up during the depression and dust bowl days of Oklahoma, in addition, he lost his dad to a mining accident when he was only 8 years old. Also, his older brother Ed was killed while serving in WWII. Like many, he had seen hard times.
It was at my dad's funeral, that it was finally revealed why he wore those red socks. You see, he wore those red socks, so that when he was feeling down, or times seemed hard, he could look down at those red socks and be reminded of the blood of Jesus, and the pain and suffering he endured while on the cross, so that we could be forgiven and have eternal life in heaven. So as a constant reminder, through good times and bad, he wore those red socks.
Since that time, my family has honored my dad's tradition, by remembering Christ, by wearing those red socks, as that daily reminder of the pain and suffering on the cross, that he went through for all of us.
Thank you for allowing the Allgood family to share that long lived family tradition with you and your family and friends!
Sincerely
Ron Allgood
